This is the story of a wonderful, beautiful Shiba Inu – BIS/Grand National/Am.Ch. Frerose Otomi, or Tomi, as he was called. Tomi was the top winning Shiba Inu of all time. He was the Number one Shiba Inu for 5 years in a for, from 1995 – 1999.
When he first began to walk he had a certain presence that was unmistakable. Once he learned to walk on lead, he was a natural show dog. His attitude toward a collar and lead was that they were other dogs, certainly not for him!! He was doing just fine without the restraint, Thank You Very Much!!
When he was 3 months old we took him to a Match show in Harrisburg, Pa. He had just blown his baby fuzz and looked pretty naked. Fred took one look at him and asked, “Why are we showing this naked, untrained puppy?” Apparently Tomi heard him and decide to “show him”, because he walked into the ring, trotted around like a seasoned dog and walked out with Best of Breed, Group I and Best Puppy in Match!
In the Best In Match ring, Tomi stopped mid stride to pee. He had been holding it in all day, so it turned out to be a quite lengthy procedure. After a few minutes the judge came over to look at what he was doing. Tomi looked up at her as if to say, “I’ll be with you in a minute, When a guy’s gotta go, he’s gotta go!!! The spectators loved it and all applauded him.
Tomi went to his first “real” shows at 6 months of age and finished his Championship with three – 5 point majors! His first time out as a Special, he took B.O.B. over top ranked specials and went from there to being the Number 1 Shiba Inu in the country for the next 5 years! He won back to back Best of Breeds at Westminster Kennel Club and was the top producing sire of AKC Champion Shiba Inu in 2001.
Tomi was the top winning Shiba until Ch.Goodwill Hunter came along and far surpassed his record. But most of all, Tomi was our beloved companion and family member. His is sadly missed.
